About MFRA

"Providing information and education about the positive aspects of forest management."

The Michigan Forest Resource Alliance (MFRA), founded in 1989, is a non-profit 501(c)3 educational organization. Our mission is to inform and educate the people of Michigan about the positive aspects of forest management. We represent the forest community of Michigan in promoting our forests. Through the sustainable management of our forests, we can continue to create jobs and products for society as well as nurture a healthy, vigorous, living forest.

Through the years 1998 and 1999, MFRA reached over 3.5 million people with its forestry message. The TREE program, first presented to 5th grade students in 1995, was in over 200 schools in ‘98 and ’99, reaching 13,429 students throughout the state. This program is very well-received by schoolteachers and their students. With the program presented in classrooms, through teacher workshops by the Michigan Geographic Alliance, and through teacher packets of information distributed, over 5,000 schoolteachers have received factual forestry information.

In addition to school outreach efforts, exhibiting at shows, messages in TV advertisements and on printed grocery bags have shown the general public that healthy forests are a product of sustainable forest management.

A cooperative newsletter between MFRA and the Michigan Tree Farm Committee is published quarterly and is distributed to members of both organizations and other interested people. A multitude of printed information is distributed through our toll-free number.

With the completion of the Michigan Forests Forever video and the upcoming CD-ROM of the same name, numbers of students reached will increase substantially in the next few years. Our media program has been bigger than ever due to co-sponsors of our ads. Being able to share costs of airtime with others allows our ad to be shown more times while staying within our budget.

The Michigan Forests Forever video, produced by MFRA and Michigan United Conservation Clubs, was the recipient of a Teddy Award for the 1998-1999 Best Conservation Program. The Teddy Awards are an international competition awarded by the Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association.

The Michigan Forest Resource Alliance’s membership is made up a diverse mix of the forest community, ranging from individual landowners to large corporations. MFRA is also contracted as the administrative agent for Michigan’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)SM Implementation Committee. Members of these organizations work diligently together to create an environment essential to the health and well being of the living forest.
